Superb pair of low fireside chairs in turned wood with woven straw seats, in the spirit of French rustic-modernist furniture from the 1940s and 1950s.

These seats stand out for their low, sculptural proportions, typical of so-called “fireside chairs.” Their silhouette is particularly decorative: cylindrical turned legs, large spherical finials, elaborately shaped front stretchers, backrests with two curved bands, and woven straw seats in a cross-hatch pattern.

The design evokes post-war French artisanal furniture in the style of Charles Dudouyt: a robust, warm, and highly architectural aesthetic that sits somewhere between brutalism, country chic, and high-end rustic design.

The natural straw adds a beautiful graphic texture, contrasting with the dark, glossy patina of the wood. Their low format makes them ideal as occasional chairs, fireside seating, or decorative chairs for a bedroom, living room, or entryway. They can also be used as accent pieces in vintage, wabi-sabi, country house, chalet, brutalist, or Mediterranean interiors.

Condition

Good overall condition with signs of use. Beautiful patina on the wood, with normal traces of age. The woven straw seats are in good visual condition. Sturdy structure. Sold as a pair.
